Southwell Running Club
One of the most coveted races of the season took place this month, in the shape of the Flora London Marathon. Quite obviously vast amounts of training takes place in order for athletes to make their appearance at the start line of this event. Some of our runners battled with much anxiety about whether their training injuries would allow them to succeed, whist others were struck with coughs, colds and other viruses preceding the race. Ultimately several club runners took part and congratulations go to: Julie Stafford 3.45 (pb), Dick Durance 3.58, Ian Ireland 4.32, Kim Thornhill 4.52, Helen Jones 4.52, Wayne Wilmot 4.58 and Barbara Garrett 5.16. This has clearly enthused numerous SRC members to consider the race next year!
On the same weekend husband and wife Jen and Peter Sutton took part in Rotterdam Marathon. Peter succeeded over the 26 mile route in a time of 3.35 and Jen in a time of 4.10. Well done to both of you! Jen Sutton and Peter Sutton used the Connemara Half Marathon as part of their above marathon training run. This course, despite being utterly picturesque is an extremely gruelling and testing course. Therefore the success of John Cummins is surely noteworthy?! John finished in a time of 1.43 and managed to take the position of 2nd in his age group! Peter finished in 1.45 and Jen in 1.55.
On 23 April, Southwell Running Club hosted the first of the summer road league events. The club works incredibly hard to ensure that it has individuals to marshal this event and also to provide a full team/s of runners. This year the weather was incredibly kind, offering perfect running conditions to the 23 competing, club runners. On the night, the club was able to field four separate teams in the men’s and women’s competition. Our Senior women’s team finished 11th on the night (from 30 teams) Frances Mckinnon led the team home finishing in 8th place and well supported by a good group of new members. The veteran women finished 8th on the night (from 12 teams) In the men’s race we were led home by Paul Grogan who eventually finished in 19th position following an injury scare at the 5 mile point which required him to slow down a little in the run-in !! Our senior men’s team finished 18th (of 29 teams), whilst the vets started off their campaign strongly in 3rd place (of 17 teams). Indeed there were some very encouraging performances on the night and a positive start to the rest of the series. A special mention should go to Bev Owen who effortlessly orchestrated the marshals aided an effortless race night!
Other events this month have included the Coniston 14. Bev Owen, Helen Jones, Barbara Garrett and Jane Meade all took part in this race.
Brian Drescher was the only SRC member to run the Ranby 10 in a credible time of 1.17.
And finally Mick Turley would like to thank all club members for helping him celebrate his 70th birthday last month. He would also like to express his appreciation for all the gifts and cards in which he received. Mick is an inspiration to all members who think they may be getting too old to run! Katy Simpson
