Summer Running Fun
As Spring rolls into Summer, Southwell Running Club members have continued their pursuit of running activities up and down the country.
Always looking for an endurance challenge, Kat Hall and Lee Mulraney took on the Lakesman Half Ironman set in the breathtaking natural beauty of Cumbria. Beginning at 6.30am with a cold 1.2 mile swim in the crystal clear waters of Derwent lake, followed by a 56 mile cycle around the beautiful countryside of Cumbria and finishing with a half marathon run through an equally stunning area. Lee completed the event 5:17:33 and Kat 6:00:05.
Further afield, Julia Sotakova completed a half marathon in Banska Bystrica Slovakia in a time of 2:13, beating her previous time by 9 minutes.
Penny Durance took part in the Nottingham 10 Mile race held at Holme Pierrepont and came first in her age category in a time of 1:28:00.
Peter Gault and Rhod Price took part in Whelbourne Running Week; which consists of 5 x 5k races over the course of the week. Rhod achieved 6th place out of 65 runners.
Steven Rice, Ben Parker, Nicola Blatherwick, Jane Matthews, Loraine Fozzard took on the Summer Solstice 10k which takes place on Midsummer’s Eve and follows a fairly flat route around the quiet roads of Long Bennington. Steven crossed the finish line in 39:07, Ben in 44:17 Nicola in 45:11, Jane in 51:38 and Loraine in 57:41.
Elsewhere, a favourite event for many club members is the Round Sheffield Run, which has both a Winter and a Summer version. The race circumnavigates the southeast side of the city in 11 stages totalling 20km. The running stages are interspersed with 10 walking stages adding up to 4k. This unusual event has numerous steep climbs totalling an ascent of over 2,000 feet which are followed by equally steep downhill sections taking runners through beautiful woodlands and parks and onto the final sprint back through to the finish. The six club members who completed this Summer’s event finished in the following times
Carol Hayward 2:15:37, Pam Dutton/Izzy Pass 2:04:45, Steve Tomlinson/Nigel Whitmore 1:53:56 Ben Parker 4th in his VM60 age category in 1:31:33.
Our sessions continue throughout the summer and, as always, new members are always welcome to come along and try a few sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings or Saturday mornings.

Runners Embark on Summer League Race Season
Fourteen members of Southwell Running Club took part in the first of the Notts. AAA Summer League Races at Newark Showground.
The event, which is hosted by Newark running clubs, took place on a wet and windy evening. However, the conditions did not deter more than 600 runners from 20 different clubs from sprinting their way around the exposed route presented by the showground. The SRC veteran women's team finished in 9th place and the men's team finished 11th.
Additional club news saw Nigel Whitmore, Sarah Mckie and Jess Coyle all completing their first marathons. Sarah's hilly course, which she completed in 4:34:45 took her through the countryside around Boston Lincolnshire, whilst Nigel took on the equally challenging Leeds Marathon, crossing the finishing line in 3:39:45. Jess's slightly longer and very much hillier 27-mile trail took her out onto the Taff Trail and around the Taly-bont Reservoir at Brecon Beacons and included some particularly challenging downhill sections. Jess finished as 4th lady in a time of 6:08:01.
Finally, Louise Flisher took on her first half marathon in Birmingham, crossing the finish line in 1:59:58.
Whether you are running a few miles for fun or have accidentally signed up for your first challenge, we welcome you to join us on Tuesday or Thursday evenings or Saturday mornings. For more details, visit our website.

A Month of Marathon Mania
The month of April is traditionally a key time for spring marathons in many parts of the world. Members of Southwell Running Club have not been shy in signing up for marathon and half marathon events and taking on the gruelling task of training throughout the winter. Months of long runs in wind and rain finally brought them to their respective start lines to complete their ‘victory laps’.
Julie Stafford, Penny Durance and Katie Botham travelled south for the challenge of Brighton marathon on a blustery but sunny Sunday at the beginning of the month. Julie completed the course in 4:10:41, Penny in 4:22:28 coming third in her age group of FV65 and Katie finished in 4:45:08
Kat Hall, Lee Mulraney and Lauren Birkbeck went further north for the second largest marathon in the country, in Manchester. Great conditions for running gave Lee a finishing time of 3:35:55, Kat ran her third marathon this year, in 3:42:23 and Lauren finished in 4:33:20. Carol Hayward’s marathon travels took her overseas to Boston Massachusetts for the hilliest and most challenging of the World Majors marathons. Having completed this on a very warm Monday in a time of 4:57:26 she flew home and took on the London marathon 6 days later.
This year, the conditions in London were perfect and many other members of SRC also took on the challenge whilst soaking up the fantastic atmosphere and unbroken crowd support along the course. The London Marathon really is something special.
Club member and Paralympian Gold Medal Winner Richard Whitehead achieved yet another PB in 2:42:02, Helen Ramwell finished in 3:45:54, Mel Duffy in 3:49:57, Jane Matthews in 4:27:08, Carol Hayward in 4:50:14 and Brendan Parkinson in 5:01:12.
Other members of the club were busily completing half marathons throughout the month; Phil and Toby Hyde Barker ran the London Landmarks Half which takes in many of the London landmarks on the north side of the river. Phil finished in 1:54:39 and Toby in 2:02:36
Ben Parker, Nigel Whitmore, Stephen Holt and Bill Lee ran the Rutland Half Marathon on yet another blustery day. The undulating, scenic route takes in both trail paths and country roads through beautiful Rutland countryside. Ben finished in 1:42:21, coming first in the V60 age group, Nigel 1:47:40, Stephen 1:55:00 and Bill 2:17:47 again, coming first in his age group (V70). Jess Coyle ran the very scenic yet hilly Sheffield Half in 1:39:44 and finally five members of the club took part in the charity fundraising event of Not the London Marathon run on the same day at The London Marathon in Eakring. Runners can run between 1 and 4 laps of the course. Ben Parker and Alan Davidson both completed the marathon distance Pam Dutton, Helen Ward and Bruce Danby completed the half marathon distance
As always, we welcome new members to our Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday sessions.
Happy Running,
Ruby Runner.

More Muddy Challenges
The Belvoir Challenge is known for its muddy, undulating course but this year the 26.3 and 15 mile routes of hills and mud along byways, tracks and minor roads throughout the beautiful Vale of Belvoir excelled itself in producing the muddiest course ever, following the recent rainfall. The day itself was overcast with some rain early in the day but this cleared away allowing runners to enjoy a slightly drier run than had been expected.
Penny Durance and Julie Stafford completed the course in 6:06:44 with Kat Hall and Lee Mulraney just behind them in a time of 6:16:05. Katie Simpson, Alan Davidson, Nigel Whitmore, Steven Tomlinson and Brendan Parkinson all completed the 15 mile route with Katie coming in as second lady in a time of 2:22:48, Alan finishing in 2:39:14, Nigel and Stephen in 3:12:32 and Brendan in 3:24:25. All runners declared it was the muddiest and slipperiest course they had ever experienced for Belvoir Challenge.
Congratulations go to a small team of SRC runners who took part in the Notts County Fell championships at Wolf’s Pit. Ian Haigh, Jess Coyle and Paul Orton won the silver medal in the mixed team category and Jess won silver in the open women’s competition.
Several club members ran the Ashby 20 last weekend, with most using this 20 mile undulating road race as a warm up for their spring marathons. Lee Mulraney completed the event in 2:37:43, Kat Hall in 2:39:48, Mel Duffy in 2:50:13, Penny Durance in 3:12:55 and Lauren Birkbeck and Megan Mulraney in 3:36:59.
In more sombre news, at the start of a recent training session, a club member suffered a serious medical incident. Due to the very prompt actions of a number of the club members and the use of a nearby defibrillator he was able to be supported in becoming stable by the time the very efficient NHS emergency services had arrived and was taken to City hospital for further recovery. The emergency services praised the very prompt actions of the club, in helping to the runner’s life. This has also highlighted the importance of all runners wearing ICE ID when they are out both alone or with a group.
As always we encourage new runners to join us on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturday mornings for a variety of different running activities.

Cross-Country Season.
Members of Southwell Running Club Jess Coyle, Sarah Mckie, Michelle Hall, Loraine Fozzard, Adam Smith, Ben Parker, Paul Orton, Alan Davidson, Ian Haigh, Stewart Lenton, Rhod Price, Nigel Whitmore and Stephen Tomlinson took part in the East Midlands Cross-Country League Races this year. The three races held at Bramcote Park, Colwick Woods and Long Eaton cover a 5k distance for women and a two lap 10k distance for men. The fourth race usually held at Holme Pierrepont was cancelled due to recent flood damage on the course.
This year has seen an increase in enthusiasm from SRC members with men’s and women’s teams being fielded for all three events, leading to a 5th place score for SRC senior women and 5th and 7th positions for the 2 men’s vets teams. Club member Jess Coyle commented that she had loved every minute of the season including the hills and mud but especially the team spirit.
In other news congratulations go to Nigel Whitmore who completed his longest run yet taking part in the scenic Valentine’s 30K and finishing in a time of 2:36:45.
The club continues to grow in numbers with Tuesday night training sessions proving extremely popular, especially for those training for the Belvoir Challenge and Spring marathons. As always, we welcome new members to any of our sessions. Find out more at www.southwellrunningclub.org.
